On Friday, the U.S. Congress passed a nearly unanimous resolution condemning the on-going violence in Iran following last week’s suspect elections, in which incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was announced as the victor over Iranian opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi and other candidates.
During a Republican press conference just prior to the vote on Friday, Rep. Mike Pence emphasized the United States’ special role in promoting democracy around the world.
“Our interest here, our purposes from the outset, was to give the American people an opportunity to condemn the violence, condemn the repression of a free and independent press and ultimately to speak a word of support to the brave men and women on the streets of Tehran,” Pence said.
In this video, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews interviews Rep. Pence and offers congratulations to him on the resolution which passed 405-1 and was sponsored by Pence. The sole dissenting vote was by Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.
