By Greg Giroux
Roll Call Staff

Former Indiana Sen. Dan Coats (R) is set to announce Wednesday that he will challenge Sen. Evan Bayh (D), and there are already signs that he will run with the backing of influential Republicans.

Coats, who retired from the Senate in 1999 and was succeeded by Bayh, released a statement to the Indiana-based Howey Political Report that said he has “become increasingly alarmed and frustrated about the direction of our country and the failure by leaders in Washington to listen to those they were elected to represent.”

Coats, now a senior adviser with the firm King & Spalding, drew support for his Senate bid from Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), who had considered challenging Bayh but recently passed on the race.

“I am very excited about the possibility that former Senator Dan Coats may run for the United States Senate in 2010 and I sincerely hope he does it,” Pence said in a statement. “His integrity and conservative record would make him the ideal candidate for Hoosiers. If he runs, I will support him.”

Meanwhile, in a sign that Democrats are concerned about having another seat put into play this year, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a statement that attacked Coats as a “federally registered lobbyist whose client lists include banks, private equity firms, and defense contractors.” It also described him as “a Washington DC insider.”

Coats would become the instant frontrunner in a May 4 Republican primary that already has four candidates, including former Rep. John Hostettler and state Sen. Marlin Stutzman.

Coats has about two weeks to collect the signatures of 4,500 Indiana voters, including at least 500 in each of the state’s nine Congressional districts.

On Tuesday, Congressman Mike Pence announced the appointment of Gregg Puls as his new campaign finance director for Indiana.

“Gregg has a solid reputation for integrity, hard work and professionalism. I am pleased to announce that he has joined our campaign team as our new finance director,” Pence said.

Puls has been active in the Hamilton County Republican Party, where he has managed local campaigns for Hamilton County Circuit Court Judge and Fishers Town Council. He currently serves as president of the Fishers GOP Club.

Puls has also served as Director of Development for Conner Prairie Museum in Fishers and prior to that was the Manager of Annual Giving for Kiwanis International Foundation. He has also worked in development and fundraising for the American Lung Association and Ball State University.

“It is an honor for me to join the Congressman’s campaign team. I look forward to meeting his supporters around Indiana and working to make sure the Pence campaign has the resources it needs to be victorious in the 2010 election,” Puls said.

The nearly three-minute ad states:

“The American economy is on the ropes”

“Our values are taking hits”

“Pummeled with a trillion dollars in tax increases”

“Our nation’s confidence is down for the count”

“Mike Pence has stepped into the ring”

While there is no direct mention of “Pence for President,” it’s one heckuva teaser ad that seems to suggest Mike has indeed thrown his hat into the presidential ring. Check out the video on Mike’s campaign web site, this link on YouTube, or click to play the video below.

Pence to Visit Iowa

For months now, Mike Pence’s name has been mentioned in various circles as a strong prospect for president. Lately, he has been getting lots of face time on the Sunday morning talk show circuit and on cable news outlets, including Fox News, MSNBC and CNN. Earlier this week, word spread of a visit to Iowa on July 24, which was confirmed by GOP leaders. Iowa is the home of the first major electoral event of the nominating process for president. Its caucuses receive a great deal of media exposure and are an early indication of which candidate might receive the party’s nomination at the national convention. The details of Pence’s itinerary while in Iowa have not been announced.

The Palin Resignation

After the Pence video debuted Friday, Sarah Palin made a nearly simultaneous announcement of her intent to step down after 2½ years as Alaska governor, citing family needs, though many are asking what’s next. Liberals quickly lobbed sure-fire criticism of Palin and her resignation, although it could actually be a shrewd move to explore her own presidential possibilities without the constant, unnecessary ethics investigations and the relentless challenges of running a state.

Mike’s Facebook Comment

Accompanying the campaign video, Mike released a note on his Facebook page echoing the video’s sentiments:

STEP INTO THE RING!

Dear Friend,

Happy Independence Day! The fighting spirit of our founders still lives in many Americans today. During a time of expanding federal powers and encroachment on life and liberty, we are reminded that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

The American economy is on the ropes and our values are taking damaging hits. Unfortunately, President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid are ramming their radical liberal agenda through at a startling pace. As you know, I have been fighting against these efforts to expand the federal government’s size and power and against the explosion in spending coming out of Washington, D.C.

Are you ready to fight back? A growing number of friends are stepping into the ring. More and more Americans are speaking up and letting it be known that “enough is enough”. If you are ready to join the fight, please click on the link below. Our team has created an introduction video to my campaign. I hope it will encourage you to join me in the ring in our fight against the left’s agenda.

There are three ways that you can help. Three ways to join in the fight…
1) Volunteer to help in one of the several ways listed on our website;
2) Make a donation through our online contribution center;
3) Spread the word! Forward this e-mail and video link to your like-minded friends.

When you visit our new website you can make sure that you are signed up for our Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and E-Alert network. Together we can win this fight, but I need your help. We will not go down for the count! Please join me in the fight for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

God bless you,
Mike Pence

Presidential Trivia

Of historical note, only two men have ever gone directly from serving in the U.S. House of Representatives to the Oval Office:

Rep. Abraham Lincoln (of Illinois’s 7th District) in 1860

Rep. James Garfield (of Ohio’s 19th District) in 1880

Other representatives who also served as presidents had first made jumps to Vice President, Senator or Governor before assuming the presidency.
